Italian Media's Effect on Culture
The documentary “Videocracy” focuses on the media’s influence on Italy and making anyone popular – of course touches upon the danger the current Prime Minister owning many of these channels. It is about the effect of commercial television/media on Italian culture for the past 30 years, from everyday customs to the dangerous possibility of political influence. The current Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has created a media empire that started in the 1980s called Mediaset. His channels would show mostly American/foreign programs dubbed in Italian, such as Silver Spoons, Cosby Show, Smurfs, and the summer music series Radio DJ – Italy’s popular radio station which had a sort of MTV spring break type program.
